Abstract


Reading is a skill that must be mastered by elementary school students, because reading skills
are closely related to the learning process. Reading is a process used and carried out by
readers to receive messages or facts conveyed by the author through his writing. Beginning
reading is a serious reading activity in understanding the content of the text. To master the
skill of beginning reading, students often face a number of obstacles and disturbances that
make the beginning of reading difficult. This study aims to describe various kinds of students'
difficulties in reading skills at the beginning of grade II Elementary School and the factors
that influence students' difficulties in early reading. This research was conducted at SDN
Serdang Wetan, JL. PENDIDIKAN NO.50, Ds. Serdang Wetan, Kec. Legok, Tangerang.
This research is a qualitative research with descriptive method. Data collection techniques
were carried out through interviews, observation and documentation. The results of this study
are that there are students who have difficulty in beginning reading skills, namely: (1)
students are slow in recognizing letter characters, (2) cannot connect words to form sentences,
(3) students only know a few letters (4 ) students only know vowels, (5) and lack of practice
in reading. The factors that cause students' difficulties in reading skills come from intellectual,
psychological, and environmental factors. The teacher also said that students played more
because there was less supervision from teachers and parents.
